I was a Family Doctor for 46 years & also had my own busy Chemical Health Centre for 5 years where I worked with many very distressed people, treating over 5,000 Problem Drinkers & Addicts in over 40,000 consultations.

The Minor Tranquilizers are mostly Benzodiazepines & addictive & should be avoided, especially for more severe problems, when large amounts are taken & addiction soon follows. In the end the only Minor Tranquilizer I prescribed was Baclofen, which is mildly addictive if used on its own in large doses for long periods, so I nearly always prescribed it as Bactrex, which is Baclofen + Low Dose Naltrexone.
A Major Tranquilizer/Antipsychotic e.g. Aripiprazole, added to Bactrex, was what I found worked best for severe Anxiety, Insomnia & where there were Voices (Hallucinations) or Paranoia.
A Mood Stabilizer e.g. CarbamazepineCR, Gabapentin or Lamotrigine, added to Bactrex is what I found worked best for Irritability, Anger, Rage or Violence, in some severe cases with Aripiprazole added.
Low Dose Naltrexone blocks Opiate Receptors for a short time, which blocks Endorphin chemicals’ effects. That stimulates the Brain &Glands to increase their production of the over 20types of Endorphins that between them calm & fix many kinds of distress.
In the end I NEVER recommended any addictive medicines – they’re no longer needed! I rescued 1 Family where the Grandmother, Mother & a head injured Son between them were taking 35 Ambien (Stilnox) per night & a couple who’d been on Methadone every day for 22years, which is 8030 days.
Simply detoxing addicts wasn’t enough. After detox they struggled, were unhealthy & unhappy & often relapsed until we found & fixed their underlying Mental Health problems. Most had a complicated mixture of underlying problems – Relationship, Work, Money or Housing problems &/or Worry/Anxiety, Sleep Difficulties, Post Trauma PTSD, Adult ADD/ADHD, Bipolar Disorder &/or Major Depression. Detox just took them back to being the troubled person who was first driven to drugs.
In addiction clinics few ever got the accurate Diagnosis, Prescribing & the extensive Counselling they needed to resolve the original problems that led to their addictions because the usual methods were so time consuming & costly. We needed new ways that enabled a large amount of self-help & over the years I developed 4 tools.
